Interior DESIGN


The Design Manager at Thomas Interiors is a non-production design management role overseeing a team of 16 designers. This role will collaborate extensively with sales to represent design process in sales presentations and contribute design deliverables as needed for client projects.



  • Develop and manage a best-in-class design department through enacting a performance management cycle, to include performance evaluations and coaching

  • Manage all departmental project assignments while actively looking for process improvement opportunities

  • Ensure adherence to the departmental budget and company policies and procedures

  • Build a robust training program within the Design Department to develop a strong working knowledge of the contract furniture lines, including features/benefits, pricing, application and assembly, specification options and nomenclature, etc.

  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of workplace trends, such as ergonomics, technology integration, teaming, alternative office environments, etc.

  • Manage all outsourcing of design services, including renderings

  • Facilitate departmental professional development opportunities to enable designers to grow professionally and broaden their experience

  • Interface regularly with external stakeholders, including clients, general contractors, subcontractor tradespeople, clients’ A&D firms, electricians, etc.

  • Collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders across all company departments

  • Serve as the lead facilitator of discovery sessions with new and existing clients

  • Partner with Herman Miller’s Design Readiness Department to implement training and technology initiatives

  • Network with local interior design schools to build candidate pipelines for internships or full-time positions

  • Represent the Company in the local chapters of ASID, IIDA, and other design-related organizations



  • Four-year degree in interior design required from a CIDA-accredited program

  • Minimum of 10 years of interior design experience

  • 5+ years of system furniture/space planning preferred

  • 5+ years of management experience preferred

  • NCIDQ certification preferred

  • Proficient in AutoCAD and either ProjectMatrix or 2020 Cap

  • Experience with CET Designer preferred

  • Highly proficient in all Microsoft Office programs



  • Strong understanding of contract furniture processes, including order preparation, project management, and delivery/installation

  • Extensive knowledge of the interior design field and current practices

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization

  • Excellent graphic design capabilities and design eye

  • Detail-oriented with problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and collaborative work environment

  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work with minimal supervision
